Recently, CHISAGE ESS assisted Cuoqing County in Ali Prefecture, Tibet, in successfully completing a pilot project for centralized heating using clean energy. The project was equipped with a 690kW/690kWh energy storage system and 440kWp photovoltaic components. Leveraging the abundant sunlight resources in Tibet, the project achieved flexible distribution and stable supply of electricity throughout the year, setting a new benchmark for green heating in cold regions.

The Ali region is one of the highest and most rugged areas in Tibet, often referred to as the “Plateau within the Plateau,” with an average altitude ranging from 4,500 to 5,500 meters and many areas exceeding 5,000 meters. During the project, the team overcame numerous challenging conditions, including high altitude, extreme cold, strong winds during construction, and long-distance transportation. They actively coordinated top-quality resources to ensure the project’s successful completion.

In this project, our energy storage system features a modular design based on 100Ah lithium iron phosphate cells. The system contains 10 parallel battery clusters, each composed of 9 battery packs in series (1P216S), with a unique “individual cluster management” advantage. This design ensures that even if one battery cluster experiences a fault, other clusters continue to operate independently, significantly enhancing system safety and stability while reducing maintenance demands. Even in the challenging high-altitude environment, our energy storage system operates reliably, providing local residents with a highly dependable energy experience.

Based on the seasonal power demand in Tibet, CHISAGE ESS designed two main application scenarios for its energy storage system to meet the differing energy load requirements in winter and summer. The area’s primary loads consist of two parts: the living power load for on-site employees and the solar heating unit. The employees’ living load is approximately 50kW, while the solar heating unit’s power varies with sunlight intensity, increasing as sunlight becomes stronger.

In winter, when heating is required, the solar heating unit is activated, resulting in a higher load. During the day, the photovoltaic (PV) system prioritizes powering the load, with additional power supplied by the grid to ensure stability. The energy storage system serves as a backup, providing power support in emergencies. In summer, as the heating demand decreases, the primary load shifts to the employees’ living power. At this time, the transformer is turned off, switching to a fully off-grid mode that relies entirely on energy storage and PV. During the day, the PV system provides continuous power; if its output is insufficient, the energy storage system steps in as needed, ensuring round-the-clock energy self-sufficiency.

Thanks to Tibet’s abundant sunlight, the solar PV system generates an average of 2,000 kWh of electricity per day. Calculated at the local industrial electricity rate of 0.7 RMB per kWh, this results in daily savings of approximately 1,400 RMB. Typically, generating 1 kWh of electricity with coal emits around 0.9 kg of carbon dioxide. Thus, this project reduces carbon emissions by 1,800 kg per day. This setup not only significantly lowers daily operating costs but also reduces dependence on the grid and carbon emissions, contributing to environmental protection and energy-saving social benefits.
